i used to be an “addiction isn’t a disease” person until i became an addict myself, people don’t understand the complexity of addiction and how simple it is to get hooked on something.

As someone who has addiction issues: it is a choice. One that you make day by day. Been sober for 4 years and not a moment goes by that I don’t want pills. I’ve had multiple opportunities to relapse but made the choice not to, despite how desperately I wanted to. Making that decision in active addiction is a struggle that you just don’t understand if you haven’t been through it, but it is still a choice to continue or make a change.

It may not be like any other addiction, like drugs or alcohol, but I used to struggle with an sh addiction. And it was bad. I couldn’t go just a few hours without it. Addiction is an illness, no matter what you’re addicted to.

Addiction isn’t a real disease. You have a mental disorder of some sort that is undiagnosed but addiction is not the diagnosis. Addiction is a byproduct of your mental illness. Addiction is a side effect of using drugs with addictive properties in them. The sooner people understand that the sooner they’ll actually start getting help and stop using their disease as a crutch in their addiction 🤷‍♀️
