Dear Ms. Young,
Thank you so much for your email. I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever received feedback this meaningful before, and I’ve reread your message multiple times already. Hearing that my essay stood out to you so strongly, honestly means more to me than I can fully put into words. I’ve always respected the way you teach and the standards you hold for writing, so knowing that you saw something special in my work is incredibly motivating and rewarding.
To answer your question, I think what changed most this year was my mindset toward writing. At the start of the year, I treated essays more like assignments that just needed to be completed correctly and turned in on time. Over the past several months, though, I started realizing that strong writing is really about developing an original perspective and learning how to communicate ideas clearly and intentionally. Instead of focusing only on finishing, I’ve been spending much more time thinking deeply about the text itself — especially the themes, symbolism, character motivations, and the author’s purpose behind certain choices.
With The Great Gatsby in particular, I became really interested in how Fitzgerald presents the idea of the American Dream as something both beautiful and destructive at the same time. I found myself wanting to go beyond surface-level analysis and actually explore the emotional contradictions within the characters and the society they live in. Once I started approaching literature that way, writing became much more engaging for me because I wasn’t just explaining what happened in the story — I was trying to build an argument about why it mattered.
I also changed the way I prepare before drafting essays. Earlier in the year I would usually start writing almost immediately, but now I spend a lot more time outlining my structure, organizing evidence, and thinking carefully about how each paragraph connects back to the larger thesis. I’ve learned that when the structure is strong, the writing itself feels more natural and focused. I’ve also been paying closer attention to transitions, sentence flow, and making sure every piece of evidence is
