the thneed is closer related to a Stanley water bottles. the bottles themselves are not a problem but the over production and over consumption of waterbottles is causing harm.

This is an amazing video and actually does a lot to voice my concerns about the "anti-AI" position and how I think it actually does more harm than good when fighting against the harm this technology causes. When the product is centered as The Problem, the conversation then is about holding the consumer accountable for finding aspects of it useful. Then it becomes about moralizing the use rather than the unethical way it came about or operates or can operate in the wrong hands. We take the ire off the system and cooperations and onto the average person. This leads into some very messy rhetoric that actually undoes so much progress when it comes to the separation of church and state, disability rights, and class IMO, because the main argument then becomes: "We don't need it! If it is of any use to you! You are less human!" which is a massive problem IMO and can apply to many different products beyond AI and the Thneed. Rather than taking cooperations up to task with asking: Can this product be produced more ethically? Can it be produced with less destruction to our environment? Can it be improved upon in ways that would make it more difficult to create harm with it? What companies are doing the most harm? Treating it as instead something that will bring problems and having those problems tackled accordingly. You're right! The fact that it is useful for some people is not an excuse to use it recklessly! I loved that point, the good a product brings doesn't excuse the harmful ways it comes about or is used for and we should do what we can to combat the exploitation. Another concern I was having also existed in the fact that often flimsy arguments of bringing up other industries like meat and agriculture in response to AI, often leads to the argument of "Well we NEED to eat" yes, we do! but the exploitation is STILL BAD. We should not avoid talking about it just because meat and dairy are seen as more necessary. This is why framing these things as wether or not we need them is bad to me, because that's so subjective and arbitrary, when we should actually be centering the capacity for harm and how to lessen it as much as possible.

The thneed itself is GOOD and USEFUL. the amount of RESOURCES the thneed takes is BAAAAAADDD. The way it worked was GOOD. Most other of it was BAD.

If we want a good 1-1 comparison, I'd compare it to fast fashion. If you take care of your garment and don't just throw it in the trash, there's nothing wrong with it. It's the people producing them that's the issue, much like the lorax.

In the 2012 version, they show that there IS an ethical way in making the thneeds, but the onceler and his family get greedy and do the “mass production” route that inevitably ruins the environment.

This is exactly what I thought when I saw that video. However imo makes it a better analogy for ai. AI is super useful and it is super useful for countless different applications. The problem is not AI itself, the problem is there are no regulations restricting how much water can be used and how that water can be used. there are no regulations restricting energy use, or waste from that energy use. there are no regulations restricting the use AI itself to prevent mass job loss etc.

I dunno, you could argue the uses of ai too helpful and has its uses, i still think the thneed is a fair comparison even though its not a one to one example.
