Being a guitarist for 6+ decades, there is NO SUCH THING as the greatest guitarist. No metric exist in determining the greatest guitar player unlike in certain sports. There is only opinion !

Hendrix changed the trajectory of guitar - riffs and leads, clean and distorted, feedback, tone, technique, recording processes, uniqueness, multi genre - he did things know one ever did. But he was not just influencial he was also technically proficient - there has been no one like him since he died. Eddie Van Halen was so brilliant. I think he was technically superior but I don't believe has had the same level of creativity and uniqueness. The are both a tremendous loss to the world of music and the craft of guitar.
