Replying to @userpamalama13 Maple moved into her maternity suite in Med-Bay yesterday, and she was so excited! 🍁🍼🐽 She’s still a little overwhelmed, but once she settles into a routine, we know she’ll relax and start nesting. We have a lot to get ready before the Saplings arrive… and honestly, we still have a 𝐋𝐎𝐓 to figure out long-term. Here’s something most people don’t realize: introducing Maple - and eventually an entire family of piglets - into a sanctuary that already has long-established herds is 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙮 complicated. We don’t just have “one small group of pigs” here. Sisu is made up of multiple herds, each intentionally built by observing dynamics. Each group has a clear leader - a top male and a top female, and then a second in command. We try to put animals with similar personalities together, and pigs who have medical or mobility needs together. We also pay special attention to bonded pairs and families.🥹 Every group has its own rhythm, its own social structure, and its own level of harmony that we work 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘭𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 hard to maintain and protect. It's a very fragile piggy ballet. And Maple? She walked in and immediately postured to Spencer and Wally through the fence. 😂 She’s tough as hell... and honestly, we have no doubt she could stroll into Retirement and be crowned matriarch by sunset. But we’re not taking that risk while she’s heavily pregnant. And waiting until after she gives birth doesn’t make it easier. Because then we’re dealing with her already fierce attitude plus full-on new mama protectiveness. 😳 GIRL. Gen-Pop is out of the question for now. Retirement is risky, and Med-Bay is temporary. So we’re mapping out options and trying to figure out what keeps Maple safe, what keeps her Saplings safe, and what keeps the peace in the sanctuary’s long-established social structure. Our goal is to keep this family together. 🙏 We are committed to giving Maple and her babies a stable, natural, stress-free life. But that may mean redesigning parts of the property... because carving out a dedicated area for this family could limit access to some of the natural resources (wallows, ponds, woods, swamp) that our other piggies currently enjoy. (And that is something we never wanted to do... which is why we closed intake.) This was definitely not on the winter BINGO card… so we are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped us hit the first fundraising milestone for Maple and her Saplings. But please keep sharing her story - because this is going to be a challenge. 😩 It’s going to take some creativity, but we’re already brainstorming, sketching, and planning.
