Not to defend this trend in any way, but I also think part of it was a backlash against the excessive stuff - the clutter - that so many people who were renting and buying at this time experienced growing up. It felt calming to them rather than sterile.

I think also it was a callback/backlash to the brown/beigeness from the 90s. It's hard to imagine now but gray seemed very crisp and fresh in the late 00s when it started. But now it's so tired.

There was a big push, right up to the 2008 crash, to “flip” houses. Investors bought them, stripped them to the most basic neutral everything and either rented them out or resold them. Those of us who were renting were often not even allowed to hang a picture, let alone paint whole walls. So everything remained neutral.

interestingly,makeup was quite bold, vivid, and colorful in that decade. even women's fashion was also pretty colorful. there was also a trend of glam interior design with lots of pops of color (like hot pink, teal and gold) on a background of black, white and gray.

It really wasn’t…it was a -sub- group not “everything” or “everyone”! There was tons of colour, pattern and creativity in the 2010s.

I always have a hard time to choose my favorite era talking colour and style, maybe 60’s maybe 70’s maybe 90’s…. BUT i know what my least favorite is, and i think we all can agree. It’s this booooring grey era. So sad. Suiting everybody is suiting nobody.
