"not demon possession", yet the wish is made w/supernatural means & involved a supernatural result. It was a type of spell. So either Nikki is capable of these acts under the right circumstances or she was taken over. You can argue semantics but it was something evil that took over OR Nikki herself as an obsessed person

If the director of the movie or whoever made it says there’s no demons or paranormal things then it be counterintuitive to try and convince opposite than what the person who made the movie decided. Think of the plot as a hypnotist but just on an extreme level and made more dramatic for a better movie
