It’s mostly because washing your rice, removes the excess layer of starch that builds up on rice. Removing that layer helps rice not clump together or turn gummy in some cases. Also, studies have proven that washing your rice can help reduce the amount of naturally occurring arsenic that’s inside of it.

AS AN ASIAN WHO EATS RICE DAILY SINCE I WAS ALLOWED SOLID FOODS 23 YEARS AGO—it’s not a scam. It’s removing the film of starch. Yes not harmful bc we sometimes use the water from where the rice is rinsed in on certain dishes. It’s really just a texture thing and how the rice will perform after being cooked. Hope this help ☺️

It’s just about rinsing some of the starch off. If you use a rice maker it gets gummy when you don’t rinse
