While the loose locks of hair in Wuthering Heights are not technically “hairwork” (as they are not “worked” into braids, gimps or in the flat style) they still fall squarely into the centuries-long tradition of hair worn as keepsake. Interesting that in this novel, preserving the hair of the deceased is not the focus, and instead it’s about which of her loves’ hair Cathy will take with her to the grave, a reversal from the norm, but incredibly fitting to the story. Even in death, Cathy remains a central protagonist. . The portrait on the cover of my mother’s copy of the book is Emily Brontë, painted by her brother. .
