HYPNOTIC RIFFS - Jimmy Page playing the instantly recognizable riff of “Kashmir” during the film “It Might Get Loud.” Recorded in 1974 at Headley Grange, this epic masterpiece found its home on the iconic double album, ‘Physical Graffiti.’ This song was a defining milestone for the band, all four members have agreed that it was one of their greatest musical achievements. In this clip, Jimmy was asked by The Edge how this riff came to be and he explained that it was born out of him experimenting with the DADGAD tuning, which is similar to a sitar tuning. Furthermore, he explains he had this song, “Swan Song”, which he had been working on that had a lot of intricate guitar sections on it. The ending riff to that song was the descending section we hear on “Kashmir” and Jimmy flipped it over on  itself to create the riff we know today - truly a riff that is quite intoxicating. Zeppelin creates a soul-stirring sonic landscape with this song that is almost certain to send chills down your spine. “The intensity of ‘Kashmir’ was such that when we had it completed, we knew there was something really hypnotic to it, we couldn’t even describe such a quality. At the beginning, there was only Bonzo and me in Headley Grange. He played the rhythm on drums, and I found the riff as well as the overdubs which were thereafter duplicated by an orchestra, to bring more life to the track. It sounded so frightening at first...” -Jimmy Page This song is unquestionably the most impressive track on the album, and arguably the most progressive and original track Zeppelin recorded. Kashmir also went a long way towards establishing their credibility with skeptical critics. Many regard this song as the finest example of the sheer majesty of Zeppelins otherworldly chemistry.
