I've used gentoo a few times in the past, I basically had the same experience as you. It's fun as a learning tool, and it actually makes a lot of sense for embedded devices like kiosks, smart devices etc but there really is just no reason to daily drive it other than you just WANT to. The headaches started outweighing the pros for me. The only devices that would REALLY benefit from the compilation optimizations are the ones with ancient hardware, which incedentally also means your're going to spend 2 days compiling every time you update lol

I've been using arch with the cachyos kernel and repositories to get architecture specific binaries. I guess you're going artix for systemd-less? might be worth adding the cachyos repos depending on your cpu

I would look into Alpine or Slackware from Gentoo given your complaints, not Artix.
