@drmichaelsays: Ebola is back- and this strain has no vaccine. It’s already in major cities in the DRC and Uganda. 540+ cases, 130+ dead, and the agencies that quietly contain these outbreaks before they reach us have been defunded. We don’t realise how lucky we are until containment fails. Out of sight, out of mind- until it isn’t. #Ebola #USAID #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth #doctor

An American doctor, who helped the fight against ebola in Africa, got infected and was flown to Berlin, where he is currently being treated.

I did my masters thesis on the political theory that allowed the 2014 - 2016 Ebola outbreak to be dealt with across multiple agencies and countries. It’s such a fascinating disease and so tragic. People simply don’t realise how VITAL agencies like MSF and the red across are. I don’t know what we’d do without MSF.

a little bit of perspective for people... Australia has around 40 doctors per 10k people, places like the Congo and Uganda have between 1 and 2. it's possible for people have gone their entire lives never seeing a hospital or doctor.. when people get sick, it's usually their families that end up caring for them, not trained medical professionals with protective equipment like gloves,etc... then there's dealing with the bodies too... this is a big reason why it's so devastating for less developed countries..

What I don’t understand is how it took so long to detect? Isn’t Ebola a hemorrhagic disease that’s generally early detected due to its atypical presentation?

They just started an armed battle in one of the clinics insisting they take the body of a deceased patient home which led to the treatment room being set on fire, but it’s always the US taxpayer at fault

With all due respect why is it only the US taxpayer that can cover public health?

It’s awful but I think that’s unfair of you to just mention America. Let’s see if the rest of the world come to their aid. Probably not though.

I get your point, but, there have been 17 outbreaks over the past 50 years. DRC is the primary epicenter for Ebola. When does containment become their primary responsibility and not the rest of the world and the US in particular?

It’s hardly Donald Trumps fault. I hate Trump, but this is not on him. The whole world could help, not just one country.

America is suffering through the dismantling of our legacy foundations that will affect us all for generations. I'm surprised the WHO didn't strategize for the dissolution of USAID because we're always one term away from a president like trump.

It’s so sad 😭 I really feel for the people living there and of course the people unwell. And the doctor 😭 I don’t mean to sound naive, but was it possibly lack of good quality PPE?
