I was seeing some Korra slander the other day that referred to her as a “water bender” and I couldn’t put my finger on why I wasn’t 100% opposed to that designation and I think you’ve nailed it. While she is the Avatar along with all that entails, water bending was so incredibly central to her whole character. Plus the fact that her first two enemies were Amon and Unalaq, both water benders(14yo spoiler), is so important story-wise.

That scene in the pool in season 1 tells all. Asami is in a swimming pool with the person who is nominally her boyfriend. Korra comes in and she immediately leaves so they can race cars together. Her first priority was always Korra

Honestly I hated bolin and opal as a teeanger/was mad bolin got with her but the older I get the more I appreciate that the writers knew what they were doing. because Bolin is lovable but he needed someone in his life who adamantly expected him to do better when Korra/asami/mako kind of just covered for his flaws every time rather than really addressing the bad things he'd do. he's not a bad kid, hes very caring, but he can be incredibly short sighted and self interested as the protected younger brother of an older sibling who has been a parental figure for a decade. and mako was just so opposed to any personal connection beyond family or romance and I love that his arc very much has him step out of that and end up single with a massive support network/so many platonic connections. korra and asami to this day always gets me emotional.

YESSSSSSS! I made a video about water being tied to the spirit world and folks in the comments made a great distinction that air is most aligned with spirituality but water is the bridge between worlds that supports LIFE. which is why Korra uses water for sprintbending and also why the north and south poles are where the portals initially were before she opened the third in Republic City

pretty sure that the creators said they always wanted korrasami from the beginning but knew they couldn’t do it outright. that’s why they waited for the show to end.

One of my favorite scenes is season 1 is that moment in probending where she bends three opponents out of the ring at once and it just truly demonstrates how she is more skilled and that even with the rules limiting her ability she is just such a a good water bender.

I love LOK! I am a forever Korra defender. I will say that if they had been able to plan 4 seasons at the start I think some of the character arcs would have been better. Like I think Amon being a Red Lotus member would have been great.

I think it starts in season 3. Season 1 was clearly written as a one and done without any longer plans as they didn't expect to get any more seasons. That's a large reason why season 2 is a giant mess. Season 3 is where the show found it's footing and started getting really good

I watched LOK after knowing Asami and Korra were ending up together and I was confused when 1 Mako was a love interest and 2 Her and Asami didnt get together until WAY later. like it was so obvious

would love to hear your thoughts on if you would adjust anything with the pacing/sequencing of TLOK. I love the show and hate that Nickelodeon didnt have enough faith in it to let them create it with their full scope from the get go.
