Uploaded Date: October 4th 2026. Time: 12:34Hrs. 🎊 Munao Zongge — The Jingpo Grand Festival 🔹 What It Is: Munao Zongge (目瑙纵歌) means "everyone gathers to sing and dance" in the Jingpo language. It is the grandest, most sacred traditional festival of the Jingpo ethnic group, who live mainly in Dehong Dai & Jingpo Autonomous. Prefecture, Yunnan — near the China-Myanmar border . It's called the "Dance of Ten Thousand People" — one of the largest mass-participation dance events in China . 🔹 Origin & Legend: According to Jingpo tradition, the dance originally belonged to the Sun God in heaven. Birds — led by the hornbill and peacock — flew to the celestial dance, learned it, and brought it back to earth beneath a wild fig tree. Jingpo ancestors saw the birds dancing, carved the patterns, and held the first human Munao Zongge. Historically it was a sacred ritual worshipping the Sun God; later it became a celebration for harvest, victory, new homes, weddings, and community unity. 🔹 When: 15th–16th day of the 1st Lunar Month (usually Feb/Mar) — established as the official date in 1983. Celebration lasts 3–7 days Listed in 2006 as one of China's First National Intangible Cultural Heritage items. 🔹 The Ceremony & Dance: Munao Shidong (Sacred Pillars) — the heart of the festival: 4 tall carved pillars showing sun/moon symbols, migration paths, and ancestral maps. The dance follows the patterns painted on them. Lead Dancers (Naoshuang) wear headdresses with hornbill beaks & peacock feathers — honouring the birds who first brought the dance. Rhythm: elephant-foot drums, bronze gongs, and wooden drums set the beat. Dance: tens of thousands move in concentric spirals, stepping and swaying in unison — simple steps but deeply meaningful, tracing the Jingpo ancestors' ancient migration journey. Participants hold long swords, fans, or handkerchiefs. 🔹 Costumes: Women: black embroidered jackets, bright woven skirts, heavy silver jewellery, red sashes Men: black tunics, turbans, carry traditional swords — symbolising courage and strength 🔹 Meaning Today Unity & identity: Jingpo communities from China, Myanmar, and northern India gather together. Thanksgiving: celebrate harvest, well-being, and peace.
