@victoriaprewofficial: MIT conducted the first brain scan study on ChatGPT users. Here are the five things worth knowing. 1️⃣: 83% of ChatGPT users could not recall a single sentence from the essay they had just written. Minutes earlier. Their own work. 2️⃣: Brain connectivity dropped 47%. The regions linked to creativity and memory were barely firing. The brain-only group showed the opposite. 3️⃣: The effects lingered. When ChatGPT users were asked to write without it afterwards, they still showed lower brain activity. The cognitive muscle had already started to weaken. 4️⃣: Speed comes at a cost. ChatGPT made tasks 60% faster but cut the cognitive effort needed for real learning by 32%. You are trading long-term brain power for short-term speed. 5️⃣: Timing is everything. The best performers in the study started without AI and introduced it later. Higher memory retention. Better results. Stronger brain activity throughout. The conclusion is not that AI is bad (I use it every single day). It is that using it instead of thinking is very different to using it after thinking. The study isn’t peer reviewed but it’s interesting research. Source: MIT Media Lab, Your Brain on Chat GPT, June 2025.
AI sharpened my critical thinking for sure. It was so incredibly, stupidly wrong I had to examine every detail it came up with.

AI is a tool, not a substitute for critical thinking. I use it to fact-check, polish ideas, get more information and brainstorm, but never to replace my own thinking, exactly because I don’t want to become dependent on it and let my brain rot. Also, it can be wildly inaccurate sometimes, so you should always take everything with a grain of salt and double check

has research indicated that there is 'a version that actually sharpens how you think' or is that a bias introduced because you 'use it every day'?

AI is a great tool to help you learn. Unfortunately, people are using AI so they don’t have to learn.

this is the thing, AI *can* be very helpful. but using AI for a task that is supposed to *teach your brain* (like writing an essay) it's pointless, because you're robbing yourself of that learning. it's a tool, not a brain replacement
