As a leader, Corporate is a bunch of jargon, made up initiatives that change in direction year over year.

It sounds like the director has no idea how anything was accomplished and deferred to others to make decisions.

It’s a bunch of words.

This is super helpful. I will say that the director answer is one that someone who actually didn’t do the work can also give. I have colleagues who don’t even know what they’re team is doing but they can share an update like this so they “look good” even though they’re not even leading their team in the complex scenario.

It’s all jargon because these Directors didn’t do anything. The Senior Managers and below did all the actual work.

I wish you had given the role play speech from both sides. I feel like I was imagining the sr manager level but had a real world example from the director level. Your director level example mentioned the the problem (stalled rev) , mentioned the timeline 2 years (then later 18 months haha), then they give you all the details of how they solved the problem. Is this satire? Or am I tripping?

The director answer was fluff … senior manager actually did the work.

All these buzz words, a lot of fluff. Aligning teams, executive level sponsorships, developed playbooks, problem solve, roadmap, enterprise clients. Sounds like a corporate robot, I would never hire anyone who sounds like that.

Haha I was going to say…the senior manager did all the work…the director had the crisp bullet points for the ‘solve’ that were actually written by the SM who saved the day to provide feedback to the higher ups :) -signed a senior manager

@heyjuz: the difference why director level replies like this is because , directors are far from the actual solution, they have an idea how it was done, but the in and out is the tactical person that actually knows :( For director you need to learn to speak with confidence what you have an idea of

Seen in the comments: junior employees conflating the ability to get things done with the ability to do work that contributes to getting things done.

I agree with this. As a manager who used to report up to a Director now reports directly up to a VP he looks at me like I have 10 heads when I speak about all the things I did to get to X.

The corporate jargon sounds like a can of slop to everyone except those who operate daily with that verbiage. It also bores me to death. But I agree… for that audience, it is effective.

This made me realize I do this without realizing I do it. This was very insightful. As a director, if I had to explain everything, it would be “noise”, but it’s about being clear and concise about the objective and showing results at the end of the day.

All I heard was they each gave a version of a STAR answer. Would have been more helpful to hear the actual example VP answer bc they both told you about the problem, all of the steps they took and what the outcome was.
