Most people hear impermanence and they hear loss. Nothing lasts, so why bother. But that is not the teaching. The teaching is something far more hopeful than that. The wheel turns. It always turns. That is its nature and it is also yours. When you are at the bottom, when everything feels stuck or painful or impossible, the human instinct is to grip. To brace. To try to stop the turning because the turning feels like the problem. But the turning is never the problem. The resistance to it is. The Buddha called this Dukkha. Often translated as suffering, but more precisely: the suffering that comes from clinging. From demanding that what is impermanent become permanent. Here is what changed everything for me when I truly understood this. The same wheel that brings you to the bottom is the wheel that brings you back up. The descent and the ascent are the same wheel. The same turning. The same law. Which means the moment you are most certain the wheel is moving against you is very often the moment it is moving you toward something you cannot yet see. The Wheel of Fortune in tarot says the same thing. Always in motion. Never fixed. The sphinx at the top is not a symbol of luck. It is the symbol of the one who understands the law and is no longer afraid of the turning. Whatever bottom of the wheel you are currently sitting at: it is still turning.
