@childocdtherapist: Confession compulsions can make someone feel like they have to “tell” every thought, urge, mistake, or fear that pops into their mind. Not because they actually did something terrible. Not because they truly believe the thought. But because OCD creates a powerful sense of urgency, guilt, or responsibility. “What if I’m hiding something?” “What if I’m a bad person if I don’t confess this?” “What if keeping this to myself means I’m dishonest?” So they confess. Sometimes it’s about intrusive thoughts. Sometimes it’s about things that never even happened. Sometimes it’s about completely ordinary things that suddenly feel morally wrong or dangerous because OCD attached itself to them. And while confessing may bring temporary relief, OCD rarely stops there. It usually comes back with: “Okay…but what about THIS thought?” “Did you tell the whole truth?” “What if you left something out?” Over time, families can accidentally get pulled into the cycle by constantly reassuring, processing, or responding to every confession. The goal isn’t to ignore your child. It’s to learn how to support them without feeding the OCD loop. I dive deeper into this in an episode on the AT Parenting Survival Podcast called Are You Talking to Your Child or Your Child’s OCD?! I'm undiagnosed but when I was younger I always got the worst intrusive thoughts and I felt like I was gonna explode from anxiety if I didn't confess them so I told them all to my mom 😭

This is the type of OCD I have and I hate it and the worst thing is that sometimes it makes me confess even some secrets that nobody should know

this is me realising that when i was younger, i used to do exactly this. i’d go to my mom and say “i have a worry” and then i’d say something so random bc it’s just a nonsensical thought that i got or something that i did earlier. i can’t remember how old i was maybe around seven ???

I wasn't diagnosed until adulthood but as a child I could not keep secrets! it would eat me up inside. I confessed anything and everything...thankfully with medication and therapy it's gotten better but it really is so distressing.

Being the mom of an OCD kiddo it's hard and exhausting. I know he needs me and I'm there to support him as much as possible but the need for validation is REAL and most of the time it just makes it worse but it's what you want to do as a mom which is fix it and make it better immediately.
