I read the dictionary as a kid, I told my friends when they asked why I used big words and they teased me about it, so I hid it, I’m just now coming out from behind the mask

I am 43, I was diagnosed with ADHD just before my 40th birthday. After the diagnosis I realised that I have been masking all my life.
I don't even remember who I actually am without the mask.
It's exhausting..

the criticism is so much worse if they can tell you're gifted when you're 2e, too... they get mad at you for not trying hard enough just because the answers came easy so you didn't HAVE to try

many people in my past spoke about my potential and moments later asked me. to be quiet, slower, less.
At 45. I am slowly blooming into the real me. I no longer accept anyone else's definition of what is normal for me. It might be normal for them and that is ok.
I am no where close to my capacity, as I still removing shackles and their effects.
I am looking forward to what is over the next hill 😁

be yourself and don't care what other people think, you'll come out on top in the long run. it'll take a minute, but you'll come out on top

I was an electronic engineer for 35 years. I wasn’t kept around for my sunny disposition, they put up with me because I could design/troubleshoot anything. The burnout is very real :(

I often tell people that I know I’m hard to handle, so the masking continues every single day. It’s exhausting.

I still act less intelligent in certain circumstances than I actually am at 42 years old.

Funny. I haven’t gotten better at masking with age. I’ve just gotten tired.

For a long time, I felt I was fake. Inside, I was ashamed because I new I was a poker face. I wanted to be honest and authentic but as soon as I tried to be my real self, people around me were worried something was wrong. But they didn't know my true self, only the mask I was waring.

I become the person I need to be for the person infront of me. It's why in school I could hang with any social group. But, I mostly stay away from people now. At least at home I can be me...LOL

This is me. I had the benefit of growing up in California in the 70s and they had gifted programs thru middle school. I hit high school without those programs, so I put my focus into student government and clubs.

I loved studying the dictionary as a kid. I can’t remember anything that happened in my gifted program as a kid.
