I literally have never thought to tell my kids that an adult would never ask a kid for help.. they'd ask another adult. I feel silly, but thank you. 🫶🏼

the problem is that its hard for kids to rationalize in the moment. i was always such a terrified and timid kid. never wanting to get in trouble as a kid etc and i always always always knew stranger danger. but one day I was like 9 years old walking my Rottweiler on a main road in the pouring rain just a couple blocks away to the park and back and a car stopped and a man asked if he could give me a ride home and I got right in his car with my dog........ like praise God he took me right down the street to home and never came back bc he then knew where I lived. but like.... kids minds dont always think and process in the moment. I hate that I did that because I was such a rule follower and a goodie 2 shoes. and I KNEW STRANGER DANGER. it was drilled in my head and I still got in the car bc it was pouring rain smh.

Someone told me once to have a very random secret word. If someone was meant to get them the adult would know the word. I can’t tell you my kids word, but they are teenagers and they still know it ❤️

I feel like we should start teaching children different types of safety scenarios because the methods people use nowadays to manipulate or solicit children are not always the obvious “come get candy” or “come see my puppy” situations that we grew up hearing about. A lot of older Stranger Danger messaging focused on obvious lures like candy or puppies, but modern child safety education has evolved because grooming and manipulation can look a lot more normal, familiar, and emotionally convincing now. I feel like today, people with bad intentions are often using more subtle and manipulative approaches to gain a child’s trust. They may try to appear safe, familiar, friendly, or emotionally understanding rather than suspicious right away. Sometimes it’s through online platforms, games, social media, or by slowly building trust over time instead of using the stereotypical “get in my van” approach people were taught about years ago. That’s why I think it’s important that children are taught more realistic and modern safety awareness skills instead of only focusing on outdated Stranger Danger examples. Kids should learn about boundaries, manipulation, online safety, trusted adults, emotional coercion, and understanding when a situation feels uncomfortable or inappropriate, even if the person seems nice or familiar.
