Before it was a choked dumping ground, the Nairobi River was Enkare Nyrobi- "the place of cool waters." It was a pristine lifeline, the very reason our capital city was built here. But for over seven decades, our collective ownership collapsed. We traded a natural treasure for rapid convenience, and today the numbers demand our attention: 🗑️ 2,475 Tons: Of waste generated across our city daily, with a massive chunk washing straight into the river system. 🥤 30%: Of this daily waste consists entirely of single-use plastics. 👥 56%: Of Nairobi's population lives along this 390-km basin, bearing the direct health and environmental costs. Right now, a monumental 50 Billion Ksh government regeneration programme is clearing the water- but infrastructure cannot build a community. The system can clear the riverbed, but it cannot force us to stop treating our neighborhoods like a trash can. True restoration starts at the source. Nearly a century of damage won’t fix itself; it requires citizens to take ownership of their blocks and leaders to back sustainable urban design. The city belongs to you, not to the garbage.
