1.The Brain: The Ultimate Controller The brain is categorized into three primary functional regions, each responsible for different aspects of human life: Cerebrum: This is the largest part of the brain and the seat of higher intelligence. It manages thinking, memory, decision-making, and all voluntary movements (like deciding to wave your hand). Cerebellum: Tucked at the back of the brain, this region is dedicated to balance, coordination, and posture control. It ensures your movements are smooth and you don't fall over. Brainstem: The most critical area for survival, the brainstem regulates automatic body functions such as your heartbeat, breathing, and digestion. 2. The Neuron: The Basic Building Block Every signal in the nervous system is carried by specialized cells called neurons. These cells transmit information as electrical impulses through three main parts: Dendrites: Branch-like structures that acquire information from other neurons or the environment. Cell Body (Soma): The central part of the cell containing the nucleus, where information is processed as an electrical impulse. Axon: A long, tail-like fiber that transmits the impulse away from the cell body toward other nerves or muscles, often protected by a fatty layer called the Myelin Sheath for faster signal speed. 3. How Information Travels The nervous system functions through a specific "Signal Communication System" that follows a logical flow: Brain → Spinal Cord → Nerves → Body. To make this happen, there are three functional types of neurons: Sensory Neurons: Carry impulses from receptors (like your skin or eyes) to the CNS. Motor Neurons: Carry instructions from the CNS to effectors (muscles or glands) to trigger action. Relay Neurons: Act as the "middlemen" within the CNS, connecting sensory and motor neurons. 4. The Extensive Nerve Network The human body is mapped with dozens of major nerves that act as "highways" for data. For example, the Sciatic nerve runs down the legs, the Radial and Ulnar nerves control the arms, and the Vagus nerve helps manage internal organ functions. Together, they allow the brain to maintain constant contact with every inch of the body. #nurse #studynotes #nursingstudent #nursingnotes #student
