Part Two of Thor’s Journey! We took Thor to Tennessee Equine the following morning to have a complete examination done on him for his health, our records and the records for the agriculture department as they pursued legal matters against the owners. Thor was estimated to be right at 20 years old a confirmed body score of 1 and suffering from dehydration, and obviously starvation. When we did x-rays of the wound on his leg, we were all very shocked to find that the wire that was tied around his leg to cause the wound was still there now imbedded deeply into his leg even causing reactions from the bone. The utter and complete neglect that it took for this to happen, is absolutely maddening. You can look at the x-rays yourself and make your own conclusions of what you feel happened or how this wire ended up on his leg. We will never know the true story, but as well behaved as he was for absolutely everything we did to him during his examination there was no reason for this wire to be left on his leg to the point the flesh grows around it. Now we were faced with the fact that he needed surgery to remove the wire, but his body condition would not allow him to be able to go under sedation safely. This meant though the wire had to come out, we could not give him that relief instantly, without risking him, potentially not coming out of sedation, because of how weak his body was. As rescuers this breaks your heart because you feel like there’s nothing you can do at this point in time but wait. It was decided to give him a week to decompress from being seized out of the conditions he was in to now taking on a more normal lifestyle and and hopefully he would gain more strength as time went on, and we came up with a plan to get the wire out.
