At least 26 children have died and 25 others have been injured after a devastating fire and stampede tore through two schools in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF confirmed Friday. The death toll remains provisional and could rise. The fire broke out Thursday morning in the densely populated Chimpunda area and spread from a nearby residential building to Furaha Secondary School and Ujamaa Primary School. The blaze also destroyed approximately 300 homes, leaving many families without shelter. According to South Kivu authorities, 19 girls and seven boys were among the children killed. Witnesses reported that students desperately tried to escape as the fire spread, with some jumping from windows. A narrow exit reportedly contributed to a deadly stampede, while some children were trapped inside the school and died from suffocation. Medical facilities were overwhelmed by the number of casualties. UNICEF said 25 children were injured, while earlier reports indicated that several injured victims remained in critical condition. The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and an investigation is underway. Bukavu has been under the control of the Rwanda-backed AFC/M23 movement since February 2025, amid the broader conflict and humanitarian crisis in eastern Congo.
