@suarez.cfi: Airspace Classes Explained: Controlled vs. Uncontrolled Airspace Before a pilot can confidently talk to ATC, read a sectional chart, or understand where they are allowed to fly, they need to understand one of the most important building blocks in aviation: airspace. Airspace is the invisible structure that organizes aircraft traffic in the sky. In the United States, airspace is divided into letter-based classes: A, B, C, D, E, and G. Each class has its own purpose, and pilots are responsible for knowing what rules, communication requirements, weather minimums, and equipment may apply. The biggest starting point is understanding the difference between controlled airspace and uncontrolled airspace. Controlled airspace includes Classes A, B, C, D, and E. This does not mean ATC is flying the airplane for you. It means air traffic services are available depending on the class of airspace and the type of flight being conducted. Uncontrolled airspace is Class G. In this airspace, ATC is not actively managing traffic, so pilots are mainly responsible for seeing and avoiding other aircraft. Two altitude terms that every student pilot needs to understand are MSL and AGL. MSL means Mean Sea Level. Think of it like measuring altitude from the ocean upward. Your airplane’s altimeter normally shows altitude in MSL because it is referencing sea level. AGL means Above Ground Level. That tells you how high you are above the actual terrain directly underneath the aircraft. You may also see SFC, which simply means surface — or ground level. Once MSL, AGL, and the difference between controlled and uncontrolled airspace start to make sense, sectional charts become much easier to understand.
