I'm old enough to remember when we were actually taught how to dump used motor oil in the yard.

but my question is, why do you get charged a disposal fee if you do it at the shop, if they'll take your oil for free if you do it yourself?

I have been giving my used oil to a local garage for over 20 years, because they heat their shop with it. I started giving it to them right after they installed the system. they take old diesel , transmission fluid and turkey frying oil for their heating

the epa genuinely has no way of knowing right after you did it with them literally having to be present

My auto parts stores constantly say they're full. I tried taking it to the fire station one time too, they also wouldn't take it. I have a few reusable drain jugs full of oil.

Oil is fuel don’t throw it away at all use it as wood protectant, fuel, undercarriage rust protectant, and use it as lube for random things here and there

I just put the used oil in the fuel tank in my truck, it's a great additive (filtered to about 5 micron before I put it in the tank)

Oil Remediation Work can cost you thousands of dollars and is not covered by any home insurance policy. If you got the EPA involved, add thousands more in legal fees.
