The Great Red Spot is the largest known atmospheric vortex in the Solar System, a gigantic anticyclonic storm that has been raging on Jupiter for at least several hundred years. The first observations of the spot date back to the 17th century, and some scientists believe it may have persisted for over 350 years without stopping. The storm is located in the planet's southern hemisphere and rotates counterclockwise with wind speeds of up to 700 km/h. The spot is enormous: once, two or three Earths could fit inside it, although in recent decades it has gradually shrunk and become more circular. The spot's color varies from bright red to orange and even pale pink, and the exact cause of this coloration remains unknown. It is believed that the red hue is caused by complex chemical reactions between ammonia, sulfur, phosphorus, and other substances in the upper atmosphere under the influence of solar ultraviolet radiation. Jupiter's atmosphere consists primarily of hydrogen and helium, and the planet has virtually no solid surface, so the storm doesn't lose energy as quickly as terrestrial hurricanes, which weaken upon impact with land. Studies have shown that the Great Red Spot extends hundreds of kilometers into the atmosphere and is surrounded by powerful gas flows that energize it. Scientists have also discovered that the temperature and pressure inside the vortex differ from the surrounding atmosphere, with particularly strong turbulent flows occurring at the edges. The spot has been studied by numerous spacecraft, including Voyager 1, Voyager 2, Galileo, and Juno, which have provided detailed images and data on the storm's structure. Despite extensive research, scientists still cannot explain precisely why this vortex is so stable and whether it can persist for hundreds of years or will eventually fade away completely. #jupiter #solarsystem #spaceedit #tornado
