@ilovespirithalloween: I love SLP so I’ve been saying yes, but I’ve also been completely honest about the productivity and expectations they have for us. Lmk your thoughts #schoolslp #slp #slpgradstudent #slpgradschool #teachercareerchange

Talk to Nana made this exact transition and explained how, I believe she pinned the video explaining how she did this.

I’m a School SLP. I think something that’s important to tell a teacher that is wanting to go back to become an SLP is to make sure they understand that it is not just education based and there’s a whole medical side in case that is not something they’re interested in studying while in grad school.

Just yesterday I was thinking of going back to school. Not sure if RN or SLP. I’m currently a SLPA.

If she wants to be in the schools I’d do OT. Case managing, evaluating, and treating is just a loooot as an SLP. Also I think expectations can be more manageable for OT-related skills. Language is so broad that when we can’t “fix” students that’s a harder reality to swallow for parents.

depends! If it’s purely monetary gain I feel like there are better paths to go down

I’m an RDH with my bachelors degree, looking into SLP distant learning programs. Would you say it’s comparable pay? I’m not looking for monetary gain, I genuinely have interest in the field, relates to a lot to the field I studied but yes I am terrified if it’s worth going back to school. I’ve explored other careers but have always had a heart for rehab. My undergrad was tailored for PT/OT route but I changed my mind. Any advise?

As a former teacher of 4 years, it is totally worth it! The best switch that I could’ve made.

No. Do something else. You will be on the same pay scale as a teacher and you will accumulate 80k in student loans

I stopped at being an slpa because the ROI didn’t make sense when I did the math. The amount I’d be making extra didn’t even really cover the amount I’d take out in loans. My SLP supervisor is in her mid 40s and is still paying on loans.

Meanwhile here I am, a SLP, for now 8 years wanting to leave the field. Love what I do but there’s a lot of dirty work around this career

My friend, who actually got me into speech pathology, left his student teaching to become an SLP. My sister was also a teacher, and while she loved teaching, she hated being a teacher, and did alot of extra work from home. I think it's a decent idea if she's relatively young. I think a leadership degree to become a principal is a better idea though (what my sister did). Every choice has pros and cons though.

My advice would be for them to get an SLPA license (take less classes etc) if your state allows SLPAs to not have gone thru a specific SLPA program. I made $46/hr as an SLPA before I was an SLP. Not like that everywhere but it could also tell her if she truly loves this field.

There is a MAJOR increase in pay if you contract with schools. If you work for a district, there is less flexibility and less pay.

Agreed! I’m OT, and I’m thinking of all the pre-req courses I took that probably weren’t a part of their undergrad (anatomy, biostatistics, physics, etc.) so I wonder if they would need to get those credits on TOP of SLP-specific courses ?

I don’t know anyone that has but my personal opinion would be no! I understand the pay increase but teachers can get their masters for less credits and no clinical fellowship and to me that would be the better route. Unless she loves it so much and wants it to be her career!

I’d make the change if you aren’t in love with a classroom vibe. Therapy is very different than being a teacher. I find it very fulfilling. Not necessarily more pay but options as you get older. Part time/full time. Various settings. I’d never want to be a classroom teacher

I would wait until next year to see how the new billing codes change our income. I’m in private practice and the owner is planning for decreased reimbursement. I am not sure if school based SLP’s are worried.

I would say yes it has a perks in comparison to teaching you have more flexibility. I think it’s also to consider, we can own our own companies, and work in a variety of settings and a broad range ! Don’t get me wrong we for sure need teachers but it’s always a recommendation bc we are a high need

I went to school for a year to get my SLPA license. Maybe she should start out as that because as a school SLP there is way more to it than just therapy. Something to think about. I didn’t realize how stressful the field could be as a school SLP
