When did it become so difficult to live with the person you love? Debra and I have been married for years. We have three wonderful children, all of whom are British citizens. Yet despite that, we still don’t have a country where we can simply settle together without jumping through extraordinary legal and financial hoops. Individually, our status is straightforward. Debra has the right to live in Zambia. I have the right to live in the United Kingdom and, through my Irish citizenship, anywhere in the European Union, provided I meet the relevant conditions. Together, however, it is a very different story. When we lived in Zambia, I applied for a spouse permit on three separate occasions. All three applications were refused. No meaningful explanation was ever provided, no indication of what was wrong, and no opportunity to address whatever issue led to the refusals. In the United Kingdom, Debra has a 10-year multiple-entry visitor visa. She has always complied fully with its conditions. She has never overstayed, never worked illegally, and has always respected British immigration law. But she is only allowed to visit. She cannot simply move here to live with her husband and children. Many people assume that marrying a British citizen automatically gives someone the right to live in Britain. It doesn’t. To obtain a UK spouse visa, the costs run into many thousands of pounds. There is the visa application fee itself, followed by the mandatory Immigration Health Surcharge, which must be paid upfront. After two and a half years, the process begins again with another expensive application. Five years later comes the cost of applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain. Even then, British citizenship is a separate application with further fees. By the time everything is complete, the total cost can easily exceed £15,000 for a single applicant, before taking into account legal advice, document certification, translations, travel expenses and other associated costs. For many ordinary families, that simply isn’t affordable. The irony is that, because I also hold an Irish passport, we could relocate to another European Union country and, provided I was working there under EU free movement rules, Debra would have a much more straightforward route to residency than she does in my own country. We experienced exactly that when we lived in Germany. Think about that for a moment. It is easier for me to build a family life with my wife in another European country than it is in the country of my birth. I fully accept that every country has the right to control its borders and operate an immigration system. But surely there is a difference between controlling immigration and making it prohibitively expensive for genuine families to live together. Family life should not become something reserved for those with substantial savings. These policies affect families from every background. However, because the financial barriers are so high, they inevitably fall hardest on couples where one partner comes from a lower income country. Whether intentional or not, the effect is that many international and interracial families face obstacles that wealthier couples may be better placed to overcome. That should concern all of us. This isn’t just our story. It is the story of thousands of families who simply want what most people take for granted: the chance to build a home together. Surely that shouldn’t be a privilege. It should be a fundamental part of family life. #FamilyVisa #UKImmigration #KeepFamiliesTogether #MixedNationalityFamily #InterracialMarriage
