POV: You think water causes root rot… then you find the grossest little science experiment you accidentally created in the corner of your plant wall. 🧪🪴 So I’m cleaning up and I’m like… WHY is there a Tradescantia cutting (aka inch plant / wandering dude / Nanouk vibes) living in a test tube with slime 😜 I forgot I propagated this. I genuinely don’t think the water has been changed in at least 3 months.😳 There is slime. There is mystery green soup at the bottom. And she’s just… thriving??? 😭💅 And that right there is why I keep saying: 🌿 Root rot isn’t a “too much water” problem it’s an OXYGEN problem. In soil, when things stay soaked too long, water fills the air pockets between soil particles and roots can basically drown because they can’t get enough oxygen. When the root zone stays wet + low oxygen, that’s when root-rot pathogens like Pythium and Phytophthora are more likely to be a problem, especially in poor drainage / waterlogged conditions. Now look at this little wall test tube setup: ✅ Only the tip of the roots are in water ✅ The rest of the roots/stem are basically hanging out in open air ✅ Water still contains dissolved oxygen (yes, oxygen literally exists inside water), and plants can use it ✅ So even though the water is… questionable, the roots aren’t trapped in an oxygen-free swamp like they would be in dense, soggy soil It’s giving: “I’m not surviving because I’m lucky, I’m surviving because I can BREATHE.” 😮‍💨🌿 energy haha Plant parent takeaway (save this): If your plant keeps “rotting from overwatering,” the real culprit is usually: ➡️ Not enough air to the roots ➡️ Soil too dense ➡️ Pot too big for the root ball ➡️ No drainage holes ➡️ Watering on a schedule instead of when it’s actually ready Because water doesn’t rot roots… oxygen deprivation + pathogens do. Anyway, let me go change this swamp water haha If you want simple rescue steps + the potting mix recipe that fixes this 90% of the time. Keep an eye out for my next post :) I also share all the plant care guides I make FOR FREE in the link in my bio 🤗 #rootrot #overw#rootrot##overwaterings#houseplanttips #pl#PlantTok
