I think the reason we see these mobile suits wearing cloth is for heat masking or (hiding the suits heat from thermals) or beam protection, yes some cloth can protect a mobile suit from beam weaponry, the Crossbone Gundam wore cloth for the same reason, it could be to also hide the identity of that mobile suit, especially for being a gundam in wing zero
