Through all the funerals, all the burials, all the people I have lowered into the earth, I never exposed the face of the deceased to kiss them goodbye. But my father was the exception. He was the only man I uncovered his face for and kissed one last time. To feel him once more. To see him once more. To look at the face that raised me, protected me, taught me, and loved me before he returned back to his Creator, and before one day we will follow him. That moment never leaves your mind. It becomes etched into your heart forever. You realise then how fragile life truly is. The man you once sat with, spoke with, laughed with, and sought comfort from is now wrapped in a white shroud, about to be lowered into the earth. Allah ﷻ says: “Every soul shall taste death.” — Surah Aal-Imran 3:185 And the Prophet ﷺ said: “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we only say that which pleases our Lord.” — Sahih al-Bukhari No matter how many funerals you do, no matter how strong you think you are, burying your parents is a different type of pain. It humbles you. It breaks something inside you. But it also reminds you that this world was never meant to last forever. May Allah ﷻ have mercy on our parents, illuminate their graves, widen them, forgive them, and reunite us with them in Jannatul Firdaus.
