Replying to @Whitney Mendenhall Here are the adoption details… To introduce a hen with a chick, the hen must be broody. Ideally she’s broody for 2-3 weeks before bringing in a chick. The chicks must be day old chicks. This is because when they are freshly hatched, they don’t need food and water for 48 hours which gives you time to leave the babies under the hen all night long. Put the baby under her at night and leave them alone until morning. In this case, I had the baby under a different broody hen and in the morning she rejected the baby. So Penny got the baby in the morning and I left them alone all day & moved them to the maternity ward for the night. By morning she was bonded. It doesn’t usually work that well but apparently Penny is momma material! Signs of a good mother hen… 🐔Protects the baby 🐔Let’s the baby go under her feathers 🐔Let’s the baby pick on her 🐔Feeds the baby The maternity ward is a great place to let them finish bonding with out the chance of another hen hurting the baby. I move the whole nest pads because she’s more likely to stay put rather than pace back and forth trying to get back to her nest. I will leave them in there for about 3-5 days and then I’ll let her introduce baby to the flock. She will hopefully keep putting the flock in their place with a little momma bear aggression and then the flock will leave the baby alone and accept her as part of the group. Lydia is a Mosaic breed! If you’ve never looked them up, do it! They can be so pretty. They have blackish blue legs, face and ears, and a pretty mosaic pattern of feathers. They lay ivory eggs and are friendly and curious. #mot#motherheni#chickensi#chickenbreeds#mosaicchickeni#chicksn#hensandchickso#broodyhenrelychickens
