I’m not necessarily pro-Duterte, but looking at the brighter side, his administration showed how fear of consequences can make people follow the law and respect authority. That kind of commanding presence is something many people believe a president should have in order to maintain discipline and order in the country.

My uncle, someone I was very close to, was killed during a police raid at his house during Duterte’s term. Two months later, my father was jailed. While he was in prison, his asthma worsened significantly. Kahit papano nakapagpyansa kami. He was only free for four months before his lungs collapsed, and he passed away. Despite everything my family went through, I never blamed Duterte’s anti-drug campaign. This is simply my personal perspective. My father and my uncle were both repeatedly called during Oplan Tokhang, but they chose to ignore those warnings. They were given chances, yet they remained stubborn. I love my father and uncle, and I always will. But I can’t pretend they didn’t make choices that contributed to where they ended up. I grieve them, but I don’t excuse their actions.
