As someone who spent a couple of weekends a month at theme parks in FL for 50 years, it protects your skin from burns but also keeps you cooler. Believe it or not, when the sun hits your bare skin directly, it makes you a lot hotter than if you cover your skin with loose,light colored fabric that bounces light off and away from you.
