Fun fact! Most airplanes theoretically CAN reverse out of the gate however, it is extremely noisy, dangerous because of FOD, and very innneficent for fuel. Also, a lot of aircraft do not get pushed back with the wheels off the ground. Their nose wheel steering gets disconnected, allowing the tug to steer the nose wheels on the ground. -Aircraft mechanic

And you’re not even bringing Aircraft Mechanics into the equation..Aircraft have specific checks overnight for that plane to be safe and legal or complaint to actually fly and push back..They sign an Airworthiness Releases of planes that pilots look for so they know it’s safe and ready..and their signature stays with they plane for the life of that aircraft..now if planes need software updates or Landing gear changes,engine changes,troubleshooting avionic/auto flight failures/sensor problems,flight control issues,flap issues it’s an unbelievable amount of work and effort to maintain safe aircraft

They technically can reverse but most choose not to because it takes a lot for them to. Which is why most get pushed back to make there turn times more efficient
