Parents are scared. They aren't dealing with those emotions appropriately. It's not ok to try and control others to make yourself feel better. But if you realize it is from a place of misplaced love and not malice, it'll be easier to manage. It was really important to the parents, especially Mom who's probably seen some stuff, that the daughter have a marketable skill to fall back on. And now the daughter is very dependent on her young husband. The only way through it is setting clear boundaries, stating them lovingly, and proving them wrong over time by loving their daughter well and ensuring she is taken care of.

As a woman that has a BS in chemical engineering I hated it after my junior year. I sucked or up and graduated. Worked as an engineer for 12 years and hated it. Changed careers to nursing.

LOL, that’s funny. Nothing against people who ask the parents for permission, but I’ve always wondered: if you’re going to marry the person anyway, why ask for permission in the first place if there’s a chance they could say no? 😅
