I think he also feels safe for her because hes in love with someone else. Finnick has Annie He isn't going to try and get her to choose him like Gale. She has the shared context of the games and loss of autonomy without any of the cloudiness of romance.

I also think Gale was jealous that Finnick could relate to Katniss in a way he couldn’t. We saw that again with Gale and Peeta’s conversation in the book.

Wanted to add to your point about Katniss falling into caregiving: it’s also absolutely her automatic response to stressful situations. From Prim and Asterid, to the Avox, to Rue, to even the prep team, all the way to Peeta, she reacts this way automatically due to a combination of values and trauma.

Also really telling that Katniss just *accepts* this jealousy from Gale. But when Peeta makes a comment about Katniss and Finnick at the dinner table (unsure of exact page or details), everyone is horrified and appalled that Peeta could ever react that way.

They really could’ve filmed a 6 hour movie and I would’ve been sat!! The friendship between katniss and finnick, and katniss and Johanna was one of my faves in the book!!! I hate that it got cut

If in an alternate ending where Peter and Annie had died but finnick and gale lived, I reckon katniss would've eventually ended up with finnick which would've made gale fuming, it would've been a friend's to lovers slow romance built on a mutual understanding that they could never replace Annie and Peter and never want to. I really love their friendship and wish we had more of their friendship, they have a flirty banter but both completely trust that it's nothing more than friendship, they're on the same page completely whereas katniss and gale are not and they know that. I don't think gale could comprehend that there's nothing romantic to their flirty jokes because gale likely has never flirted with katniss without wanting more than friendship. I feel like finnick was almost like a "safety space", he understood her so there were no expectations to act like her whole world wasn't falling apart, she could simply be herself but not alone.

I think finnick also feels comfortable with katniss because she was never attracted to him at least in the movies. Given everything he went through I think she’s safe for him.
