My grandmother was forced to stop playing the piano once she was married to my grandfather. There was a piano in the house but only my grandfather and my dad were allowed to play it. The first thing my grandma did when my grandpa died was get the piano tuned, buy a bunch of art supplies, and invite her sister over to play music and paint. She was 82 years old.

Divorce was also incredibly difficult because you needed to prove someone was at fault for something and in some states domestic abuse wasn’t grounds for divorce. That’s why when no fault divorce was first introduced the divorce rate was at its all time peak because all the spouses from those same generations people idolized finally had a way out of the marriage they were trapped in for so long.

My grandma loved my grandpa more than I’ve ever seen anyone love someone. After he died she sold their home and bought another home 2 blocks from the cemetery he was buried in so she could visit him everyday.

okay i need to vent. i've spent SO much money on manifestation stuff over the years. courses, fancy journals, crystals, like all of it. hundreds of dollars. nothing changed. coworker lent me The Truth About Manifestation by Daniel Rowe last month and i'm honestly mad. this book costs less than lunch on Amazon and it did more than any course i ever bought. doesn't try to upsell you on anything either. just gives you the truth

Not all marriages were like that at all! My Grandparents had a love I spent most of my life dreaming of until I met my Husband who treats me like a goddess.

My Great Grandmother (Born 1925) told her Brothers how to Cook and clean bc she wanted to help her Dad in the Field and he Said „Yh if the Boys can Cook and clean maybe“ They all learned it, she helped him with the Farm and everyone was happy. She also was the First Woman in the Village to have a drivers license (for tractor and motorroller)🥹🥹

This is why I try not to take it to heart that my grandmother is clearly moving on from my grandfather. She was with him since they were teens. In fact she was older than him. And he got really bad near the end to the point he was barely him, so she kinda had more time to grieve because of that. And she’s 80 so I don’t really think it matters too much that she spends a lot of her time with an old man she met and befriended while living in a duplex with my grandfather. But there’s still that little part of me that is sad because my grandma didn’t even celebrate my grandfathers birthday this year and it’s only been 3 years since he left us.

My grandma talks about how much she loved my grandpa, but I wonder why she waited so long after he was dead to finally get a social life. She's flourishing, and showing more personality outside of matriarch.

My grandma who got married really young told me to wait to get married and just live your life her and my grandpa have been married for 50 years. And though she loves my grandpa very much there’s a lot more she wishes she did before marriage

My mom was a data entry subcontractor. Owned her business and the building. Subcontracted data entry for NASA during the Apollo missions during the late 60s and early 70s. Owned two IBM 129 keypunches that cost more than a new car of that era. My dad was a Union meat cutter. They were married when they passed in 2023/2025. They started dating in the 50s in DC.

My grandmother was not allowed to get a job. As in, my grandfather wouldn’t give permission. After the kids left home (Late 1960s), he let her try out part time work, but stopped it after 2 months.☹️

My grandmother worked most of her life, lived through the Blitz and loved my grandfather very much. I have vivid memories of staying with my grandparents and London in the 1960s. Unfortunately I don’t have any photos of them.

Not all were like that. My Grandma married my Grandfather before he went to WW2 and she worked while he was gone. She saved her money and when he came home, they had enough to buy a home. She continued to work outside the home because she wanted to. When she had my father she did stay home and no longer worked. When my Grandfather died she went to the cemetery every day until she was unable to.
