Wild how restoring one tree species could help reshape an entire ecosystem.

Keep talking about it. Keep spreading awareness of the native biodiversity that’s being lost. So many people don’t know these things.

there's a remote, high elevation whitewater float i have where I recently noticed a healthy population of mature American Chestnut trees. Seeing chestnut pods floating down the river makes me smile!

I have an entire yard that needs to be full of trees because I only have three pine trees…. Bring me as many trees as you want and plant them. I have no problem.

I don't think so :
I've encountered American Chestnut in the wild, in flower. The chestnut fruit is harvested and propagated. I believe the hybrid American/Asian is 13/16 American. Maybe in a century or so we'll see 99% American Chestnut. Fantastic.

I have read too, a significant contributor to the chestnut’s decline was a frenzy of cutting when people learned of the blight’s spread.

Big win. I have looked into it before I and plan on putting some in on my remote property in PA. Want to bring them back. We still have a few original American chestnuts by my property but they can only make it to very juvenile stages before the blight kills them

Get ready to go through this all over again with American Beech. Beech Leaf Disease is going to wipe out most of them. Hopefully some will be resistant, but that’ll make 5 trees in the eastern US functionally extinct in the last 125 years—American Chestnut, Eastern Hemlock, American Elm, White Ash (and other Ashes), and now American Beech. All here for thousands upon thousands of years. And capitalism ends them in a fraction of that time. And it won’t stop there, probably 😔
