Their relationship came crashing down when Linda discovered he was already married and had a daughter. She immediately cut ties with him. But Pugach refused to let go. He constantly followed her, waited outside her apartment, and flooded her with letters. What once seemed like love soon spiraled into a dangerous obsession. When Linda eventually started dating someone else, Pugach’s jealousy turned violent. Enraged, he hired three men to attack her. They threw acid in her face, leaving her permanently scarred and blind in one eye. The horrifying crime shocked the nation, and people across America were outraged. Pugach was later convicted and sentenced to prison, where he served 14 years. Yet even behind bars, he continued writing to Linda. After his release in 1974, he appeared on live television and proposed to her — and to the disbelief of millions watching, she said yes. The two married shortly after.
