My parents were BIG on the “if she doesn’t want to give a hug she doesn’t have to.” Like, fiercely defended my wishes if I didn’t want to hug. This was in the early 90s so everyone in my extended family was flabbergasted.

My mother is exactly like this. she used to tell us "Go hug everyone so we can go." I've always told my children, "Go say goodbye so we can go." They get to choose how they say goodbye.

You know if the whole thing gets to me. Because my mother was very much we don't have to hug somebody if we don't want to. However, then it came to certain family members and it was like a sign of respect so we had to do it. So very mixed messages. My kid I've made very clear if they don't wanna give a hug you're not getting one. We did fist bumps as well. Made it very clear to anybody that if they had a problem with that, they didn't need to be around my kid.

my kids have moods, majority they can't wait to hug grandparents. I won't force them to hug anyone though.

I was always expected to give hugs and do what any adult told me to do. And I too was expected to clean my plate. But I found myself always asking a child if I could have a hug making it their choice. My children were given small portions of food but if they took seconds and loaded a plate? They were expected to eat what They took.
