@irisscottart: New Sea Goddess Painting! My new painting, Nereides, 72x48 inches, imagines the sea as feminine, ancient, and mythic. At its center, a grand Nereid rises from the ocean floor, formed from currents, silk, gold, and blue-green light. In her hand she holds the fate of a ship, tiny against the vastness of her power.
Her sisters gather around her like a court beneath the waves while fish flicker through coral like scattered coins. Hair becomes current, coral becomes crown, and rogue waves yield to the subtle gesture of her hand.
In Greek mythology, the Nereids were sea nymphs, daughters of Nereus, often described as protectors of sailors and companions to the sea’s shifting moods. Here, they become guardians of passage itself.
This painting was commissioned by a collector with deep ties to the shipping world and a personal reverence for safe passage at sea. Materials: @holbeinoils oil paints on a cotton canvas from @masterpiecearts
