Valence (positive/negative emotion) and discrete emotion labels are inferred indirectly via asymmetry measures (e.g., frontal alpha asymmetry) and ML classification — these correlations are weak, inconsistent across individuals, and not validated as reliable “mood detectors.” Commercial claims of EEG-based emotion detection overstate the underlying science.
