Just one blistering sunburn in your youth can double your risk of melanoma in the future 2.Regular sunscreen use has been shown to reduce the risk of melanoma by 50% and non melanoma skin cancer by up to 40% in a high risk population. 3. No sunscreen is 100% waterproof. Apply after swimming or sweating and pay attention to the water resistant time (either 40 or 80 minutes) if you play sports in the middle of the day 4. Don’t forget eyes, ears, scalp and lips if these areas aren’t covered by glasses or hat. This is a common area I see skin cancers develop 5. Melanin is our natural sunscreen, so the darker your skin is the less likely you are to burn or develop sun induced skin cancers. Tan, olive or light brown skin is equivalent to spf 4 while dark brown skin can be equivalent to spf 13. #sunscreen #dermatologist
