@rupertstreetrecording: Some microphones become legends for a reason. 🎙️ What’s your dream vocal mic? #telefunken #vintagemics #recordingstudio #proaudio #RSR @TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik ✨
Grew up in studios in the 80s and 90s, RE20s and SM57s on everything, that was the whole toolkit and honestly it was enough. Never touched a 251E, that thing was pure mythology to us, like something you read about in Mix Magazine but never got near. Watching you work with it is genuinely making me jealous in the best way possible. What does it actually feel like to track with it? Because from everything you’re describing, it sounds like the difference between a photograph and standing in the room. An old RE20 guy wants to know.🖤🖤🖤

Okay so I just spent the last 20 minutes going down a full acoustic physics rabbit hole because of your content, and I need to leave this here. I grew up in recording studios in the 80s and 90s. RE20s on everything. SM57 on every guitar cab. SM58 on every voice. That was the holy trinity and nobody questioned it. The 251E was literal mythology to us, something you read about in Mix Magazine and never touched. But here is what I now understand about why you are losing your mind over that mic. The RE20 is honest. Brutally, beautifully honest. But the 251E doesn’t just capture your voice, it captures the overtone series, the harmonic bloom sitting above your fundamental frequency, the living texture of a sound that the RE20 was simply too workmanlike to chase. It’s a hand-wired point-to-point recreation of a 1959 design with a swappable CK12 capsule and a GE 6072A tube, and it hears things that most mics don’t even know exist. I anchored bass cabs to concrete floors for mass coupling before I knew what mass coupling was. I understood the physics from the ground up, literally. I just never had the mic that could prove what all that work actually sounded like. You do. And watching a Gen Z engineer geek out over a 1959 tube mic design is genuinely the most tubular thing on this app. An old RE20 guy is taking notes and is absolutely jealous.
