Part 2/3: “Birthdays Matter” series Q: How do you show up for a friend’s birthday? A: In any (reasonable) way that meets or exceeds her expectations. If there’s one thing you can take away from the comment section in the LAST video, it’s that we have a range of expectations about birthdays. But if it MEANS something to your friend, find a way to honor that, regardless of whether or not you’re lowkey about your own birthday. HARD TRUTH: This will vary depending on closeness, and with research that finds that only HALF of our friendships are reciprocal (more in this in the next video), there WILL BE discrepancies in what we expect from certain people and how they show up in a way that is congruent with how THEY prioritize the friendship. And hey, I’m certainly not perfect in this area. I have forgotten birthdays (twice) and apologized and sent flowers/ offered dinner the next day. I mean, as a Millennial who’s leaned on Facebook as her official memory keeper for nearly a decade, actual birthdates were hard for me for a while. But when your good friends have a birthday (especially if they are single and childfree and are often overlooked for celebration for other milestones), it might be worth stepping it up (in simple, accessible ways). IN THE COMMENTS: For those who want to show up but lack the budget/ creativity, can we work together in the comments to share simple ideas of meaningful birthday gestures? ⬇️⬇️⬇️ ------- Research mentioned in video:

It also found that showing up for positive emotions and negative emotions had a greater impact on the relationship than just showing up for negative emotions alone.
