This designation, the overall excitement around and success of the R&B tour, a recent sold out Kanye West concert and the last decade of presidential and midterm elections is a reminder that your values and beliefs aren’t as widely-held as you think. Your corner of the Internet (and your world) is an echo chamber of those who espouse your same values and beliefs, not a reflection of a community or society’s values or believes at-large. Your values and beliefs may actually be in the minority. As we near another critical midterm election, I question whether or not this honor is an effective use of time or strategy and tactic to promote voting and greater civic and political engagement. The move appears to be self-serving. Rep. Crockett might simply be a fan and used her privilege to secure this moment. This award also speaks to one of the bigger criticisms of the Democratic Party—How do they view Black voters and how they think we can be reached and engaged with. I expect Congresswoman Crockett to intentionally address or not address this Chris Brown situation this week during CBC.
