Today I'm going to show you how a garment is repleated. Thank you to George at Tom's Sons International Pleating for saving the day! Context: we forgot to warn this client that pleats soften during cleaning, common for natural fibers like cotton and silk, and we felt responsible to make it right. First it's ironed flat, then sandwiched between special paper and fed into a pleating machine with a customized program. This one's a box pleat with two side pleats, repeated throughout. It's left to cure and set into its new shape. George waited so we could open it together. Then, he spent his afternoon teaching me about his family's craft, one that doesn't get the respect it deserves. Same feeling I have as a dry cleaner sometimes: overlooked, underappreciated. Like me and my dad, George's business is multigenerational. His has been in textiles for 150 years. Standing in his workroom on 36th Street, in the heart of the garment district, I tried to absorb everything he was teaching. One small lesson that stuck: sewing pleats into a garment makes them permanent, which extends the garment's life.
