@margaretcorinne: Most med students grind past midnight before exams. I was asleep by 10pm. Graduated cum laude anyway. In med school, classes ran 7am to 5pm. By the time I got home my brain was fried. Lectures, quizzes, small group discussions back to back. Trying to absorb new material at 9pm felt like reading underwater. So I flipped it. My brain works best after sleep. The 2.5 hours between 3am and 5:30am are mine. That window is for active recall: practice tests, flashcards, notes for the exam that day. Nothing else touches it. Everything low-stakes goes in the evening. Small group discussion document where each person answers one question. Stuff that doesn't carry much weight in my grade. I do those tired because they don't need a sharp brain. Sleep is important. If I'm not in bed by 10pm the whole system breaks. 3am stops being possible. The golden window disappears. I never pulled an all-nighter in 4 years. Graduated cum laude. You have a few hours a day when your brain actually works. Protect them. Spend them on what moves your grade. Do everything else tired.
This is excellent advice! I used to sleep at 7pm or 8pm and then wake up at 3am to study. Best time to study is when the world is asleep — except pag may mga kapitbahay na nag puyat para mag videoke. 😂

same po, every exam week, my classmates asks me if I study a week before, but I only say I just study a while ago. My tactic was to write transes (reviewer the afternoon before the first day of exam), I try to put all info in just one long bondpaper, then I sleep at 9 in the evening, I wake up at 3 am and read the materials 2 times, after that, I can explain the whole entirety of the lessons. That's the secret in acing exams without compromising your sleep. At the end of the day, I passed my exams with flying colors with a face full of beauty.

Found my people. I did the same thing when I was studying for the bar: no books after 7:00 PM, and up at 3:00 AM for a deep study until 12nn. It worked perfectly, and I passed on my first try. Your brain really is sharper at 3:00 AM.

i'm a first-year student, and i fear i can’t do this 🥹 i get very anxious whenever i haven’t prepared for a quiz the next day, to the point that i can’t sleep without studying first. should i try to "face" this fear of mine and try to follow your study method instead? 😭

This would also work well sa board exams doc! Remember the exams happen in the morning. So you need to train your brain to be active in the morning. Hindi kailangan magpuyat when studying. I am not the smartest in my class but I studied smart. I did not read the whole book but thankfully I passed the boards.

Studied all day/night before an exam, 12 am took a nap for three hours, woke up at 3 am to review notes! Graduated 2nd in my class in pharmacy in an accelerated program that finished in 3 years instead of usual 4 years!

Finally found my people HAHAHAH. My classmates be looking at me weirdly when I say I wake up at 2–3 a.m. to study. It totally works! There's something about 3 a.m., how you only hear the insects chirping, the air is cool and still, and your brain turning its gears. I can proudly say I study half the amount of time some of my classmates study while still getting the same results, all because of this.

This kind of sleep-wake-up at 3am routine worked with me too when I was still reviewing for my board exam. Thank God I passed! 🥰🥰🥰

Can I share a story of wife? She did the same thing as you when she was a Medtech student. She said she never study it all, she just reads it make questions out of it and answers, highlighting important notes, answering and repeating it to her self, and on the day of exams she doesn’t study much but just review it again. If some subjects weren’t given that much of attention she just crams on the day of the quiz or exams both pratical, oral and written.

Same here doc, One thing that helped me most in med school was scheduling sleep first. I am now a licensed doctor.
My routine was to sleep from 6 PM to 9 PM after classes, study from 9 PM to 2 AM, then sleep again and wake up at 5 AM. I also kept a large calendar to map out exam schedules weeks in advance. A week before exams, I would do fast reading of all topics so that the day before the exam was dedicated mainly to review.
For days with two exams, I would study part of the second subject ahead of time, focus on finishing the first subject by 2 AM, then use the next day to complete my review of the second.
Finishing medical school and becoming a doctor doesn’t require extraordinary intelligence. More often, it takes grit, discipline, and the ability to plan ahead.
Wishing all the best to future doctors and future colleagues. Keep going, Doc.

I used to do the same thing. I couldn’t retain much information when studying in the evening, so I started waking up at 3 a.m. to study. This setup forced me to study effectively because I only had a two-hour window. It worked, and I graduated cum laude. I still apply a similar strategy at work now. If I need serious brainpower to fix something, I arrive at the office an hour earlier than everyone else. This allows me to focus and concentrate in peace, meaning I can leave on time rather than working two or three hours of overtime.
